South Kaibab Trail and Bright Angel Trail

Thursday: South Kaibab to Phantom Ranch

We hit the trail early Thursday morning and headed down the South Kaibab trail a bit after sunrise. After a few switchbacks, the trail follows an exposed ridge which offers sweeping views of the canyon. Around noon, we arrived at the Colorado river, 4700 feet below the rim. We set up camp and ate lunch. In the afternoon, we bought lemonades from Phantom Ranch and sat in the Bright Angel creek to cool off.

Friday: Phantom Ranch to Indian Garden

In the morning we cooked breakfast and packed to start hiking uphill. The trail followed the river for the first few miles, then turned up a side canyon toward Indian Garden. We ate lunch and again cooled off in the nearby creek. After dinner, we hiked out to Plateau Point for spectacular sunset views of the canyon and saw several condors soaring around the canyon walls.

Saturday: Indian Garden to Trailhead

On Saturday morning we packed up early and started hiking the final 3000 feet up to the rim. We powered through the climb and headed to Flagstaff for some well-earned food and beers.
