April 2019
Our flights included a 6 hour layover in Munich - enough time to ride the train to Marienplatz and have sausage and beer at Augustiner-Keller.
Our first day in Rome, we rode to Vatican City to see the museums and St. Peter's Basilica. We ate lunch at Bonci Pizzarium and later had aperitivos at the top of Castel Sant'Angelo. Next morning we walked around historic Rome, seeing the Spanish steps, Trevi fountain, and the Pantheon. We rode a bus along the Appian way to see catacombs and aqueducts, then finished with a Michelin-starred dinner. For day three, we saw the Collisseum, the Forum, and Palatine Hill before boarding a train to Florence.
In Florence, we took a walking tour in the rain and then went to Galleria dell'Accademia to see Michelangelo's David. In the evening, we stumbled onto literally the best sandwiches ever from All'antico Vinaio and watched sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo.
Next morning, we took a bus to Siena for the day. We ate lunch in an Etruscan cave and saw the Duomo di Siena. We lucked out and the rain cleared just as we climbed the facciatone. We rode back to Florence and took a train to Rome the next morning.
Back in Rome, we rented bikes for the day. We rode out to Villa Borghese and back along the river, and had one last pasta dinner in Rome.
It's hard to beat the variety of excellent food we tried. Of course fresh pasta, pizza, and cured meats were great, but we were really impressed by some incredible sandwiches including lampredotto sandwich (meat from the cow's fourth stomach) and La Favolosa sandwich from All'Antico Vinaio. We also ate at Michelin-starred Per Me Giulio Terrinoni and had fancy cocktails at the Jerry Thomas Speakeasy.
