KIHEI

For the first three nights we stayed in Kihei, right on the coast in the center of the island. We went snorkeling and spent some time at the beach. Next morning we did a hike in pouring rain at Iao Valley state Park, then recovered with a bowl of saimin.

HANA

Next we hopped in the Jeep and drove across the island along the road to Hana. It's a beautiful drive along a coastal road with many waterfalls, beaches, and hikes. We stopped for roadside smoked ribs for lunch and arrived in Hana for the evening. Next morning (after finding a huge spider in the room) we continued clockwise on the road past Hana and visited the Kīpahulu area of Haleakalā National Park for some more hiking. We stopped at Mauiwine before finishing the drive in Paia.

HALEAKALĀ

From Paia we grabbed breakfast burritos and drove up to Haleakalā National Park. We drove up to the summit and hiked the sliding sands trail into the crater. It's nearly 4 miles and 2500 ft down to the base of the crater, which made for a beautiful but exhausting hike. On our last day we slept in and went to the beach and saw a sea turtle swim up and rest on the sand.
