Atwell-Hockett Trail

Friday: Atwell Mill to Hockett Meadow

We drove out to Mineral King on Thursday night and camped at Cold Springs. Friday morning we wrapped up the car for marmot defense, then hit the trail. We cruised through the first downhill section and the next 4.5 miles before lunch, but the remaining 4 miles in the afternoon heat were brutal. We arrived to mule deer grazing in the beautiful Hockett Meadow.

Saturday: Evelyn Lake and Cahoon Rock

Saturday morning I woke up early and had coffee with the meadow to myself. Later in the morning we hiked out to Evelyn Lake. After a lunch and a bit of sunburn we hiked back to the junction and then up to Cahoon Rock. From there we had great views in all directions, and could even spot Mount Whitney to the northeast.

Sunday: Downhill

Sunday morning we made breakfast and packed up for the hike out. With lighter packs and a downhill route, we took a slower pace through the giant sequoias. Before finishing the hike we stopped to cool off in the east fork of the Kaweah river.
